Day 2: a day full of exciting activities

Finokalia atmospheric station in Lasithi. Scientific staff of the station proposed a lab workshop to the students. The activity ran four climate change related experiments.

The day ends at Agios Nikolaos, a small harbour town. Students and teachers enjoyed a full meal by the seaside.

Day 3: let's meet Greek History at Knossos

Settled as early as the Neolithic period, the palace of Knossos was the ceremonial and political centre of the Minoan civilization and culture.

Accompagnied by a local guide, students and teachers learnt about the Minoan palace history, and about its legends.

The Minoan palace is the largest, most complex, and most fancy of all in Greece.

Later in the day, the visit of the Cretan aquarium in Heraklion was an opportunity to learn more about the biodiversity in the mediterranean sea.

Day 4: Visit a Chania and the department of chemical and environmental engineers

Students attended a conference about the Polytechnic curriculum at the university of Chania. Due to delay on the road, it wasn't possible to visit the lab at the university.

Later, students had free time to enjoy the beautiful hisdtorical center of Chania;

Day 5: Biodiversity and Earthquakes at Heraklion

A titanic “battle” of plates in the Aegean causes earthquakes in Greece

The area is the threshold of contact and convergence of the African with the Eurasian lithospheric plates, with the former sinking slowly but steadily at a rate of about 4.5 cm per year below the latter.

The result is a frequent seismic activity we experimented for real!

The National Observatory of Athens (NOA) reported a magnitude 4.5 quake in Greece near Heraklion, Crete. The earthquake hit late at night on Thursday, March 30th, 2023, at 10:23 pm local time at a very shallow depth of 6 km.

It was felt as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.

Students and teachers then had the opportunity to experiment a simulation of the Kobe seism at the Natural museum, quite impressive!

Besides, the visit of the natural museum completed the discovery of the biodiversity in Crete.

Last but not least, the Greek hosts offered us an amazing farewell party!
