gender selection via abortion

Many Indian men cannot find wives. This is a consequence of gender selection which is on the rise. With ultrasound technology, parents know

whether they are going to have a boy or a girl and women tend to have an abortion when they're expecting a girl.

In rural areas, people prefer boys to girls because boys inherit the land while girls don't.

In cities, many couples want only one child and prefer that child to be a boy.

And everywhere giving money to a husband and his family for marrying a girl is still a tradition.

Families think it's too expensive to have a girl.
